What are the Awards?

Each year, the Safe Work Awards celebrate and recognise South Australians who have made a significant contribution towards Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) achieving excellence in the workplace.

The Awards include four national categories. The winners of each national category in each participating State and Territory will automatically become a finalist in the national Safe Work Australia Awards.


What are the 2009 Award categories?

  1. Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System*
    a. Private Sector
    b. Public Sector

  2. Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue*

  3. Best Workplace Health and Safety Practices in Small Business*

  4. Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety*
    a. An employee who does not have responsibility to OHS as part of their duties (eg. Health and Safety Representative).

    b. An outstanding contribution by a person with responsibility for OHS as part of their duties (eg. management representative where OHS forms part of their job description).

  5. Employer of the Year
    a. Private Sector
    b. Public Sector

  7. Augusta Zadow Scholarships

Is there assistance available to help small businesses apply for an Award?

The Safe Work Awards, in partnership with tafeSA Panorama Campus, are offering assistance to small businesses through the Small Business Student Assistance Scheme.

The Scheme matches small businesses that are applying for a Safe Work Award with student volunteers who are undertaking a Diploma or an Advanced Diploma in OHS. The student volunteers will assist small business applicants develop their applications to a draft stage.

Augusta Zadow Scholarships

What are the Augusta Zadow Scholarships?

In 1895, Augusta Zadow became the first female Inspector of Factories in South Australia. She monitored working conditions for women and minors in factories and played a crucial role in securing better conditions for them.

In memory of Augusta Zadow, two annual scholarships of up to $10,000 each are awarded to assist with occupational health, safety and welfare improvements undertaken by, or for the benefit of, women in South Australia. Prospective Augusta Zadow Scholarship applicants must demonstrate commitment to

Recipients of Augusta Zadow Scholarships can use them towards further education, research or the development and implementation of occupational health, safety and welfare initiatives. This education, study or research may be undertaken either in Australia or overseas.


Who can apply for an Augusta Zadow Scholarship and how?

Applicants for the Augusta Zadow Scholarship must be permanent residents of South Australia who have demonstrable interest, experience or background in health and safety for women, and who can begin their proposed study, project or research work in 2010.

To be considered for the Augusta Zadow Scholarship applicants must submit a proposal of no less than 500 words and no more than 1,000 words.  The proposal must include:

Entering and Eligibility for Safe Work Awards

Who can enter and how?

To nominate for a Safe Work Award, applicants must lodge their entry, supporting documentation and completed Safe Work Awards 2009 Entry Form by 5pm on Friday 31 July 2009.

All entries must comply with the standards for page size, font, format, layout, binding and supporting documentation set out on page 13 of the "Call for Entries" booklet.

Potential applicants should refer to page 18 and 19 of the "Call for Entries" booklet and the conditions of entry for more information.

When do entries close?

Entries for all awards categories close on Friday 31 July 2009 and must be received by 5.00pm. 


How do I lodge my application?

Applications can be lodged by mail or in person at the following addresses. Applications cannot be lodged electronically.

Is there a specific format that applicants have to use?

Applicants must ensure that their entries are in the following format:

Entry form: A completed and signed entry form must accompany all entries.
Binding: Provide four hard copies of your entry including supporting information. One copy must be presented in an unbound A4 format. Three copies are to be bound. For example, entries may be presented in an A4 ring binder, with wire or plastic spine binding, or in a book style with the staple binding.

Provide one electronic copy of your entry and supporting documentation if you are entering one of the national categories.

Layout: Complete the entry form and sign it. Include a cover page stating the name of the individual or organisation and the award category being entered.

Use each criterion as a heading and in no more than 1,000 words provide the information for the category you have entered. Number all pages.

You may provide supporting information with your entry, but please keep it brief.

Font: All components of your entry must be presented in the fonts Arial or Times New Roman and must be no smaller than 12 point. All text should be spaced at 1.5 lines (Microsoft Word) or equivalent.

Supporting documentation: Include four copies with your entry; e.g. publication, booklet, photos, DVD or CD.

A checklist on page 14 is provided to help you make sure you have included everything before submitting.

Judging and Feedback

How are applications assessed?

A panel of judges consisting of SafeWork SA, WorkCover SA, union and industry representatives will assess all entries for each category.

Entrants in each category will be short-listed and a winner will be selected.  During the short-listing process members of the judging panel may visit your workplace to talk to you and other staff about your nomination.

The judges' decision is final and no discussion about the merits of entries will be entered into with nominees.

Will entries and supporting materials be returned to nominees?

Entries and supporting materials will not be returned to nominees and no responsibility or liability will be accepted for any lost or damaged entries.

Announcing the Awards

How are the Awards presented?

Winners and finalists from each category will be announced at the Safe Work Awards dinner to be held on Friday 30 October 2009 at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The Minister for Industrial Relations will present winners with a certificate and a trophy.

In addition, the winners from the national awards categories will be automatically entered into the national Safe Work Australia Awards as finalists. The Commonwealth Department of Employment and Workplace Relations will announce national winners in Canberra early in 2010.
